Heres the long awaited interview with Pete Jobson.
Thanks also to Pete for actually taking time to do it and everyone who helped!!!
Hope you enjoy!!
Has Manchester influenced your sound and do you think that if you had grown up in a different place, your sound would be slightly different?
I AM AN ADOPTED MANC. I AM FROM NORTHMBERLAND. I CAME TO COLLEGE TO STUDY MUSIC. LIVING IN MANCHESTER HAS INFLUENCED MY PERSONALITY. I WOULD SAY IT HAS NOT INFLUENCED THE SOUND I MAKE. AS WITH A LOT OF THESE QUESTIONS; JOHN AND ANDY MAY ANSWER VERY DIFFERENTLY. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS JOHN SAID TO ME WHEN MET HIM IN NIGHT AND DAY ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO WAS “IF YOU CAN MAKE IT IN MANCHESTER, YOU CAN MAKE IT ANYWHERE”. THIS IS TRUE; MANCHESTER HAS A BUILT IN BULLSHIT DETECOR.
How do you think your new album will differ from the others and be innovative in its own right?
I HAVE A FEELING IT WILL BE MORE SOULFUL AND POSITIVE. WE HAVE HAD MORE TIME TO WRITE AND RECORD; WHICH IS A LUXURY NOT MANY BANDS CAN AFFORD. WE HAVE MET THE MCLEODS – THE TWO BROTHERS THAT PLAY LIVE WITH US AND THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE STUDIO WITH THEM IS INSPIRING.
Is sitting on a chair while playing bass the milk crate while playing guitar a tradition or is it to give a more unique visual performance or maybe make the music sound better!!
WHEN WE STARTED PLAYING TOGETHER WE REHEARSED IN MY CELLAR IN WITHINGTON. THE CEILING WAS TOO LOW FOR ME TO STAND UP – SO I CAME UPON THE IDEA OF SITTING DOWN AND THAT HAS MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE – THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED BY YOU KNOW.
Which one do you enjoy more recording or touring and why?
THEY ARE BOTH SUPERB. I HAVE DONE MANY JOBS I HATED FOR LITTLE RETURN TO KEEP A CHANCE OF BEING A MUSICIAN AND NOW IT IS THE WAY I MAKE A LIVING – I RESPECT AND LOVE PERFORMING AND RECORDING IN EQUAL MEASURE. TOURING IS MORE ABOUT COMMUNICATING AND RECORDING IS MORE ABOUT CREATING – BUT THEY ARE BOTH ABOUT RECOGNISING A MOMENT AND GOING WITH IT. A GOOD RECIPE IS A THING TO RECOGNISE AND WE HAVE SENSITIVE TONGUES.
When you're recording an album or a single, do you still get the same buzz that you must have gotten recording tracks in the early days?
WHEN THE BUZZ IS NOT THERE IT’S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.
How are you making the album this time, are you more relaxed about it?
WE ARE WRITING AND RECORDING IN THE SAME PLACE WE DID GODS AND MONSTERS – STOCKPORT. WE HAVE TO HAVE A COLLECTION OF SONGS BY XMAS, SOME OF WHICH YOU HEARD AT THE NIGHT & DAY. AS NORM MCLOED WOULD SAY “JOHN IS SHITTING SONGS AT THE MOMENT”. THE PROCESS IS QUITE RELAXED. WHEN IT FEELS RIGHT WE RECORD AND HOPEFULLY THAT MOOD WILL PERVADE THE ALBUM.
What’s the vibe like, making the new album; do you all feel more relaxed with each other? As you've been in the band together for so long, or do you see it as a 9 - 5 job?
WE MAKE OUR LIVING FROM KLOOT BUT I AM PRETTY SURE NONE OF US CONSIDER IT A NINE TO FIVE. WE HAVE DONE NINE TO FIVES. WHEN YOU LOVE SOMETHING IT DOES NOT FEEL LIKE TOIL – IT IS OPPURTUNITY. AFTER MAKING 3 ALBUMS WE HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE OF WHAT SUITS US BEST AND THIS SITUATION IN STOCKPORT IS IDEAL FOR US. GREAT BUTTY SHOP AND WHEN THE SUN SHINES THE VIEW FROM THE TOP FLOOR OF THE MILL IS LIKE VENICE AT EVENSONG.
Do you prefer playing intimate gigs like the N+D were everyone knows your music, or do you like experiencing the bigger venues or even festivals?
EVERY GIG IS DIFFERENT – GLASTONBERRY LAST YEAR IS HARD TO BEAT; THAT WAS A VERY SPECIAL GIG – THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE GLASTONBERRY FESTIVAL ANYWHERE. INTIMATE GIGS A RE GREAT AS THERE IS A ONE ON ONE FEEL AND OFTEN JOHN AND THE AUDIENCE HAVE A RAPOR THAT YOU CANNOT HAVE AT FESTIVALS – I ENJOY THE CRACK.
You seemed to be popular in lots of different places Russia Holland Germany France? Where do you enjoy yourself most?
PERSONALLY I LIKE HOLLAND BUT IT IS SUPERB IN GERMANY; AUSTRIA IS ALSO BEAUTIFUL – WE ARE QUITE GOOD AT DERIVING ENJOYMENT WHEREEVER WE ARE.
Do your non-English audiences pick up on the humour and the barbed lyrics?
I DID NOT REALISE HOW LUCKY I WAS UNTIL WE BEGAN TO PLAY IN EUROPE. EVERYONE SPEAKS AT LEAST TWO LANGUAGES FLUENTLY. THE COMMUNICATION IS COMPLETE.
How did you go down in the states?
HOW VERY DARE YOU!
Do you see yourselves playing together until you’re as old as the people on the Natural History cover (if things say the same)?
AS PAPILLON SAID “I AM STILL HERE YOU BASTARDS!!!”
Answering that, have you had any moments where there are tensions over music or just personal views?
NEVER A WRONG WORD BETWEEN THE THREE OF US IN 5 YEARS; DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE ISN’T IT.
What other music do you listen to?
OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS I HAVE LISTENED TO ANTHONY AND THE JOHNSONS LP A LOT. BEEN ENJOYING CLINT BOON AND WEEKEND XFM ALSO REVOLUTION RADIO OUT OF OLDHAM.
Have you had it with major labels?
NEVER SAY NEVER. IT’S JUST ABOUT WORKING WITH LIKE MINDED PEOPLE WHO GIVE A SHIT. THE INTERNET IS CHANGING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY DRAMATICALLY; THERE ARE MORE OUTLETS FOR MUSIC THAN EVER. AS LONG AS YOU CAN REACH PEOPLE THEN IT DOES NOT REALLY CONCERN ME HOW BIG YOUR DADDY IS.
Elbow or Doves? (And don’t try and get out of it)
THEY ARE BOTH; NOT ONLY SUPERB AND LIFE AFFIRMINGLY BEAUTIFUL BUT ALSO INSPIRING. FUCK ALL COMPARED TO US MIND!
Do you watch Deal or No Deal?? What do you think about the Noel Edmonds comeback?
NO OPINION TO OFFER
